KENNEWICK — The Walla Walla High School girls basketball team’s winning streak ended at 13 games on Saturday.

After beating Richland 39-33 on Friday, the Blue Devils (15-4) dropped their first game since Dec. 20, 62-56 to Kamiakin.

“We have to learn from it going forward, but it’s nice that the 13-game winning streak put us in position that it didn’t really hurt us going into the playoffs,” Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said.

Wa-Hi had trouble holding onto the ball against the Braves, as the Blue Devils surrendered 28 turnovers, compared to only 15 for Kamiakin. Regardless, Wa-Hi kept it close after halftime, as the Blue Devils only trailed 44-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

But the Braves hung up 18 points in the final quarter to extend their lead and secure the win. Mikayla Ferenz led the Wa-Hi offense, as she dropped 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Madi Doepker came up with a monstrous double-double, as she posted 18 points and 17 rebounds.

“Madi Doepker had a great game,” Meliah said. “It was nice to see her come out with a great attitude. She was able to stay on the floor and do some great things. Mikayla had a great game as well.”

Wa-Hi closes its regular season with a home game against conference-leading Chiawana on Friday.
