After a three-minute scoring drought, Sarah Phillips finally got the lid off the basket as her trey gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 margin with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

A Sidney Andrews feed to Lexie Ramirez opened a 5-0 Dayton lead with four minutes left in the first. The Irish only managed two free throws over the first seven minutes, but Allison Wujek hit two buckets and Ashlyn Lyons drained a trey to take the Bulldog lead down to 12-9 after one.

“We’ve been off for eight days,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said. “That was hard for all the teams. (And) we were kind of pumped up and didn’t handle the added adrenalin. We played a pretty good stretch of basketball from the end of the first quarter into the halftime.”

Lyons knocked down two treys and two free throws to lead the Irish on a 16-4 second-quarter run and send DeSales to the half up 25-16.

“Give them credit, Ashlyn hit some shots,” Bulldog coach Clayton Strong said. “Little things got us. We didn’t get out on Ashlyn.”

A Teresa Acock bucket with 6:01 left in the third kept the Irish safely ahead at 27-18, but the Bulldogs fought back. A Sidney Andrews bucket was followed by a deuce from Phillips, and a Kaitlyn Andrews trey culminated a 7-0 Bulldog run and Dayton trailed 29-25 heading to the fourth.

“I was proud of our girls,” Strong said. “We were down nine and cut it to four. We found out we could be competitive with a team like that for four quarters.”

The Bulldogs refused to go away, but Acock had all the answers for the Irish in the fourth.

Acock’s runner and her coast-to-coast drive with a steal jumped the Irish lead to 33-25 with 5:28 to play. Sidney Andrews hit a free throw for Dayton, but Acock answered with a triple and a 36-26 Irish lead with 4:57 left.

A deuce from Madison Mings culminated a 5-0 Bulldog mini-run and cut the lead to 36-31 with 3:17 to go. Acock drained a trey for a 39-31 Irish lead with 2:55 remaining. Mings answered with a 3 to get Dayton within 39-34 with 2:20 to go, but Lyons hit two free throws, followed by Acock’s two, as the Irish closed out the 43-36 win.

“She (Acock) shot the ball well in the fourth quarter,” Duncan said. “She stepped up and that’s what she has to do for us.”

Mings led Dayton with 12 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Sarah Phillips finished with seven.

“This is the first time we haven’t been blown out in the first quarter down here,” Strong added. “That’s as well as we’ve rebounded against this team. Shayla Currin (five rebounds, four points) played a heckuva game. She did a lot of good things for us on the floor. It (this game) bodes well for us going forward if we tighten up the little things and bring the same kind of effort.”

The Irish were led by Acock’s 16 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, and Lyons’ added 14 with four assists. Wujek grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
