Police arrest Walla Walla man after interrupting alleged rape

The arresting officer kicked open the suspect’s door after hearing a woman’s cries.

WALLA WALLA — Police arrested a 38-year-old man Thursday night on suspicion of raping a woman after intervening in the apparent sexual assault.

Mikal F. Yasin was taken into custody at his residence at 512 E. Chestnut St. about 10:15 p.m. after officers were called to the scene by another resident who had heard suspicious sounds coming from Yasin’s bedroom.

Officer Elias Joven, a responding officer, also heard voices from the room, according to his report presented in Superior Court this morning.

“The female voice was crying and was stating, ‘I am your friend, don’t do this,’” the report says.

Joven wrote that after knocking on the locked door, “I continued to hear the female voice crying and pleading, ‘Don’t do this. I am your friend. Don’t rape me.’”

Joven reportedly kicked open the door, saw the woman naked and Yasin partially clothed.

After Yasin was handcuffed, he told police, “She changed her mind.”

In an interview with police, the 18-year-old woman reported she and her boyfriend went to Yasin’s residence for a warm place to spend the night.

She said her boyfriend stayed outside, and she and Yasin went into the bedroom, where he started assaulting her.

Yasin allegedly struck the back of her head against the walls several times, threw her on the bed, and placed a hand around or across her throat, nose and mouth.

He then raped her and otherwise tried to sexually assault her until Joven knocked on the door, the police report says.

Yasin was booked into the County Jail on investigation of second-degree rape and fourth-degree assault.

He said at his first court appearance this morning he didn’t understand why he was arrested. Bail was set at $75,000.
