Letter - Teaching kids to beg for money is wrong

I don’t understand parents who thinks their children should be taught to beg from strangers.

I find it especially odd to see a new SUV let out a child in front of my house and the child then asks me for money to pay for his or her hockey team or whatever. I paid for the activities my own children participated in — and I was coerced into buying candy and cookies for my boss’ children — but I can’t imagine sending my children to beg from strangers.

Maybe I have self-respect and I wanted my children to respect themselves as well. Today a child came to my door begging for money for a parent’s WWCC raffle. So very sad.

Mr Higgins, this is an ubiquitous, innocent activity all kids enjoy doing. This is called "fund raising" actually a very American endeavor. As a member of our society you should not consider yourself "coerced" by kids who are enthusiastic about their hokey team. Sorry, but you sound like Ebenezer Scrooge! Something else , you might be too rigid with your own children.
