Pioneer girls drop GOL hoops matchups

ONTARIO, Ore. — McLoughlin High’s girls didn’t have the weekend of Greater Oregon League play they had hoped for, dropping a 44-27 decision to Baker at home Friday before traveling to Ontario and losing, 55-32, on Saturday.

Friday’s game was senior recognition night, but the Pioneers (0-6 GOL, 5-16 overall) found themselves struggling throughout the game with not converting their shots into points, getting into foul trouble and turning the ball over.

The Pioneers mustered half as many points as the Bulldogs in the first quarter and were behind 12-6. The second quarter didn’t go any better as Mac-Hi was outscored 13-7. The second half saw some adjustments by the Pioneers, but they still could only put up 14 points to the Bulldogs’ 19.

“We couldn’t seem to get going tonight,” said Pioneer coach Todd Cunnington.” The team tried really hard, but we found ourselves out of position or throwing the ball away way too many times.”

Mac-Hi had 35 turnovers on the night.

Senior Makia Carlson led the Pioneers with 10 points, and Amanda Rhoads added another six from the other post position.

Baker went 16-for-28 from the foul line, while Mac-Hi made only four of its 12 attempts.

On Saturday night, “We came out playing on our heels in the first quarter, made some adjustments to help us get back on track in the second quarter, but then could not match Ontario’s scoring in the second half,” Cunnington said.

The Pioneers trailed 27-12 at halftime. Carlson and Shannon Carter got Mac-Hi two quick scores to start the second half, but then Ontario came back to put points up of their own, outscoring Mac-Hi 18-8 in the third quarter and 10-9 in the fourth.

Carlson and Carter led the Pioneers with eight points apiece, and MacKenzie Fite added seven.

Mac-Hi travels as the fourth-place team in the GOL to play third-place Baker on Tuesday. The winner of that game travels to Ontario on Thursday.
