Touchet boys fall to Wildcats

COLFAX — Touchet’s boys held a one-point lead after the opening eight minutes against Colton here in District 9 tournament play.

But then the Wildcats found their shots from outside the arc, Jake Straughan hit four of his five 3-pointers in the game in the second quarter and Colton outscored the Indians 30-8 in the stanza.

Touchet couldn’t overcome the 45-24 halftime deficit, and had its season come to an end with a 75-53 defeat.

“We started off really good, we had no outside shots, they were all inside,” Indians coach Tim McKeown said. “But then the quarter came, and the next thing you know it was lights out for them. Everybody (for the Wildcats) hit a 3, it seemed like. We were playing decent defense, but they decided they wanted to go on a 3-point streak. It broke our backs.

“We’d call a timeout and try to get things going again, but it never happened,” he said.

The Indians did put up 22 fourth-quarter points as they never let up.

“I know my kids didn’t give up,” McKeown said. “That builds character and that’s important, but at the end of the game it still hurts.”

Ruben Butler led Touchet with 16 points and 16 rebounds, with Colton McKeown putting up 15.

Straughan racked up 24 points, with Dalton Patchen scoring 20.

The loss was the final game for nine Touchet seniors, as Conner McKeown, Cody McKeown, Cesar Velasquez, Colton Goble, Butler, Elias Martinez, Edgar Rincon, Zach Carson and Taylor Schack all leave the Indians.

“It’s a good group of kids,” coach McKeown said. “They’ll be missed.”

He said he’s got some experience returning next season in Colter McKeown, Tim Weber and Carlos Rincon, along with a couple more who spent time with the varsity squad and freshmen to provide size and depth.

“We’ve got a pretty good nucleus coming up,” the coach said.

“Overall, it was a pretty good season,” McKeown said of the Indians, who finished 12-10 overall, 9-9 in Southeast 1B League play. “It was a winning season, something for the boys to be proud of.”
