TACOMA — All four local competitors lost their opening matches at Mat Classic XXVI at the Tacoma Dome on Friday.
Pomeroy’s Wyatt Hyer fell to No. 1 seed Milo Holston in 1:14 in the 126-pound class as teammate Taylor Lewis fell to Garrett Green in the same weight division.
The two Pirates then squared off against each other in the loser’s bracket, with Hyer claiming a 3-1 decision win. Hyer then lost a 11-7 decision to Grant Camenzin.
Fellow Pirate Everett Stevenson, in the 195-pound division, fell to Cody Hoffman in the first round, before losing by fall to Andrew Carney in the loser’s bracket.
“We had a tough go in Tacoma,” Pomeroy coach Brian Slaybaugh said in an email. “Our kids wrestled hard but came up short of a medal. They had a good season and worked hard this year. They should be proud of what they accomplished.”
The lone Waitsburg-Prescott grappler at the state meet — Tristan Newman — dropped his first match to Daniel Fruh, before rolling three straight wins in the loser’s bracket.
With a chance at third place, Newman was unsuccessful against No. 1 seed Octavio Alejandre, who scored a pin in 3:16.
