Shot at buzzer downs W-P at regionals

SPOKANE — The Tri-Cities Prep boys basketball team scored a buzzer-beating floater to end Waitsburg-Prescott’s season at the District 7/9 regional tournament on Saturday.

With only nine seconds remaining, Tri-Cities Prep lofted a high-arcing shot from inside the paint to seal a 53-51 win.

W-P rallied from a 36-26 halftime deficit to take a two-point lead with only two minutes remaining, but turnovers down the stretch proved costly.

“They have really quick guards and we were not passing the ball well,” W-P coach Tavis Crittenden said. “We just didn’t do a good job passing the ball. They didn’t value the basketball.”

W-P’s second half defense was nothing short of spectacular though. After allowing 15 field goals through the first two quarters, the Jaguars could only muster four after halftime with only one basket in the third.

Unfortunately, Waitsburg-Prescott could not turn its stingy defense into points on the other end, as W-P scored only nine points in the third frame.

“It came down to poor shot selection,” Crittenden said. “They run a 2-3 zone and we really let them dictate where we were taking our shots. It really, really hurt us in the end. We couldn’t capitalize on playing good defense.”

Corey Brownlee led W-P with 15 points and 18 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Owen Lanning added 10 and Luke Alexenko knocked down three 3s en route to nine points.

The loss ends W-P’s season, but Crittenden credited all of his players for their hard work, especially toward the end of the year when W-P won seven of its last 10 games.

“We had kids coming and going a lot,” Crittenden said. “Once we got our roster set and got a better team chemistry, it really started working. It really took a while to understand how to win and what their roles were. They really clicked toward the end. They’re hard working kids.”

W-P graduates four seniors — Brownlee, Nate Bartlow, Chad Pearson and Kyle Dozier.
