HERMISTON — Keegan Shepard hit an early free throw to give Weston-McEwen’s girls a 1-0 lead over Union in the first game of the Blue Mountain Conference District tournament at Armand Larive Middle School here Friday.

Then, Bobcat standout Keesha Sarman took over.

Sarman hit two quick buckets en route to a 12-point first quarter — and a game-high 37 points — as Union handed the TigerScots a 68-56 defeat.

The loss sent Weston-McEwen against Elgin, a 38-29 victor over Enterprise on Friday, on Saturday morning, and the TigerScots got back to their winning ways with a 39-21 win on Hermiston’s court.

The victory advances W-M to the first round of the state tournament this Friday, with a site and opponent to determined.

On Friday, Sarman led the Bobcats to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter. The TigerScots outscored them 49-46 the rest of the way, but couldn’t overcome the slow start.

“We played them pretty even after that (first quarter),” W-M coach Amber Doremus said. “We let Keesha get a little loose there in that first quarter, and that was the difference.”

The TigerScots pulled to within 36-23 at halftime, and to within nine points in the final minute of the game, but the Bobcats hits their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Molly vonBorstel led W-M with 20 points and nine rebounds in the game, with Ammarae Broncheau scoring 12 and dishing three assists.

Sarman was backed by Elly Wells’ 17 points.

“We played hard the whole time,” Doremus said.

On Saturday, it was the TigerScots jumping out early on Elgin as W-M held an 11-2 edge after the first quarter and were never threatened. It was 18-8 at halftime, and a 16-point W-M third quarter put the game away.

“We applied pressure early and often, causing Elgin errors,” Doremus said, as the Huskies committed 33 turnovers in the game. “We were able to limit their inside touches.”

vonBorstel again led the Tigerscots with 16 points and seven rebounds. Madison Carlin had 10 points.

“Offensively, we worked the ball around well to find the open player,” Doremus said.
