Man demands arrest; jailers grant wish

Deputies arrested a 19-year-old man at the Walla Walla County Jail after he demanded to be put behind bars — then gave them several reasons to do so.

Coleman D. Cantrell went to the jail lobby at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, and asked to be arrested, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Jail staff told Cantrell there were no warrants for his arrest and that he would have to leave.

“Cantrell became enraged and demanded he be arrested” Deputy Steve Duehn stated in the report.

Cantrell then took off his shoes and “danced around like he was a boxer” before kicking the ATM in the jail lobby, damaging the screen. He also punched several lockers, urinated on the lobby floor and snorted several lines of a white powdery substance on a lobby counter.

“Cantrell was stating that he wanted to go to jail so he could get clean and get his life straightened out,” Duehn wrote, adding that Cantrell was combative with deputies and police before eventually calming down.

Cantrell was finally arrested on investigation of second degree malicious mischief.

“The white powder substance he snorted turned out to be a protein supplement,” Duehn wrote in his report.

A sad story illuminating once again our need for more comprehensive mental health care. In this case it points up the need for a secure psychiatric facility for those needing short term stabilization and evaluation.

Very sad. I know of a few people who have done this to be put in the jail because they were tired of being homeless. I hope he gets the help he needs to become clean.
