John Robert (Bob) McGreevy passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Garfield County Memorial Hospital in Pomeroy, surrounded by his family and shrouded in the sacraments of the Catholic Church.
Born July 26, 1932, to John and Albina Yochum McGreevy, Bob spent his life farming and ranching in Garfield County. He graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1950 and attended Gonzaga University, where he played baseball. He returned home to farm and married his sweetheart, Joe Ann Triplett, on Sept. 1, 1951. Together they raised a family of five and filled his life with all manner of family and friends, always with his signature brand of humor.
Bob enjoyed the work of farming and ranching, raising cattle, hunting, spending time with his grandkids and great-grandchildren, and having coffee with the morning crew. He was also an avid reader and Mariners fan. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, the Washington Wheat Growers Association, and the Cattleman’s Association, where he was named Cattleman of the Year in 1969.
He was preceded in death by Joe Ann in 2005. He is survived by son, Doug and his wife Debbie of Cheney, and their children Jim and partner Gabby of Royal City and their children Malachy, Brenna, and Aemon; Amy of Cheney and her daughter Kaela; Mary and her husband Joe Johnson of Gilbert, Ariz., and their daughter Erin; Stephanie and her husband Mark Hildesheim of Rio Rancho, N.M., and their daughters Olivia and Faith; daughter, Doloros and her husband Phil of Fort Collins, Colo., and their sons Jake and Zach of Fort Collins, and daughter Kelley of Lafayette, Colo.; son, Don of Pomeroy and his children Katie Jo and husband Johnny English of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and their daughters Hailey and Hazel; Christina of Pomeroy; C.J. of Cheney (EWU); and Tyler of Pomeroy; son, Dan of Pomeroy and his daughter Whitney of San Diego; son, Pat and his wife Toddette of Pomeroy, and their sons Mitch of Pullman (WSU) and Bryan of Pomeroy. Surviving siblings include sisters, Fran Keller (Bill) of Portland, Edna Mae Barnes (Dick) of Seattle, Pat Woodward (Bob) of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and brothers, Tom McGreevy of Vancouver, and Ken McGreevy (Kathy) of Colfax; sister-in-law, Christine Ankney of Pomeroy; numerous nieces and nephews. Brother, Bill; and sisters, Eileen, Joan, Eleanor, Caroline and Catherine preceded him in death.
The Rosary will be recited Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy. A viewing at the church will be held Thursday prior to the Rosary at 6 p.m. and Friday prior to the graveside service from 9-9:30 a.m. Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Church, where he was a communicant. A luncheon will follow at the Catholic School.
