Barbara Jean Eiseman Unterseher was born on May 27, 1927, in Winona, Wash., to Gladys Sanford Eiseman and Joe Eiseman, the youngest of six children. The family lived in various towns in the Northwest, including College Place, during her childhood.
After graduating from Auburn Academy, Barbara attended the College of Medical Evangelists (now Loma Linda University) where she received a degree in nursing. During her time in Loma Linda she met a handsome medical student, Wilmer Unterseher. They were married on July 18, 1948, in Seattle. They lived in Los Angeles while Wilmer completed his medical training. In 1952 they moved to Milton-Freewater, where Dr. Unterseher established his medical practice. Barbara worked as a nurse with her husband at times, but mostly kept extremely busy raising four children, helping as a parent volunteer in their schools, and doing church work.
Barbara and Wilmer celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1998. They enjoyed their retirement years together spending time with their children and grandchildren, traveling, gardening, and enjoying summer vacations at Priest Lake until Wilmer’s passing in January, 2001. Although her life was never the same after his loss, she continued an active life of service that included helping her family and friends, and serving as head deaconess in her church.
All of Barbara’s siblings, save one, preceded her in death. She is survived by four children: daughter Carol Unterseher of College Place, daughter Jana Unterseher Luce and son-in-law, Larry Luce of Atlanta, Ga; son Reginald Unterseher and daughter-in-law, Sheila Dunlop of Kennewick; and son Raleigh Unterseher and daughter-in-law, Ronda Sackett Unterseher of Chico, Calif. She also is survived by a brother, James Eiseman of Walla Walla; 10 grandchildren; three grandsons-in-law; a granddaughter-in-law; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many others who called her mom, grandma, or friend.
