Helix boys top Klickitat

HELIX — The Helix boys basketball team focused on rebounding in its game against Klickitat on Thursday and the Grizzlies’ emphasis on the glass paid off.

Helix held a 32-7 rebound advantage, including 15 offensive rebounds, as they downed the Vandals 46-31. Jeremy Rochelle led the Grizz with five rebounds, but assistant coach Ben Maney said it was a team effort to soak up the glass.

“Our game plan today was to get the rebounds, especially on the offensive boards,” he said. “We felt we had an advantage there, the boys responded there and kept fighting.”

Helix also turned its rebounds into points, as big man Jason Bushman finished with a game-high 13 points. Dusty Bennett also added 11 points and a team-high five steals and two assists.

Helix’s press defense also propelled the Grizzlies to a 14-2 advantage in the third quarter. After taking the lead in the second quarter, Maney said Helix put its foot on the gas in the third frame.

“It was big because we had a good second quarter, but we really wanted to come out in third and get a good lead for the fourth quarter,” he said. “The kids responded really well. It was good, (we) got some momentum and that press really created some fast break looks for us.”

Helix faced Walla Walla Valley Academy for the Helix Tournament championship at 1 p.m. today.
