COLLEGE PLACE — A 39-year-old man died in a two-alarm fire Saturday morning at 1867 Bliss Lane.

Andrey N. Gorkovchenko was discovered dead in the house.

Firefighters discovered the body in a bedroom. The official cause of death and cause of the fire are still being investigated.

Officials reported that at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday fire crews were called to the newer home owned by Andrey and Liliya Gorkovchenko.

When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed and a billow of smoke could be seen from miles away.

College Place firefighters were assisted by Walla Walla County Fire Districts 4 and 6 and Walla Walla Fire Department crews, who took about 45 minutes to control the flames.

An hour later at exactly 11:18 a.m. — as crews reeled up hoses, stowed away gear and continued to prod through the ashes looking for embers — a small team of firefighters carried out the body of Gorkovchenko, turning it over to Walla Walla Country Coroner Richard Greenwood.

Greenwood said an autopsy on Gorkovchenko will take place today.
