WALLA WALLA — A Kate Ferenz bucket three minutes in gave Walla Walla a 4-2 lead here Saturday in girls Mid-Columbia Conference basketball action.

Pasco proved to be a pesky foe but the Blue Devils never trailed again and an 18-5 fourth-quarter run sealed the deal as Wa-Hi emerged with a 51-33 win.

“I knew it would be tougher than what some people thought,” Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. “They (Pasco) have been playing every team tough. It was frustrating to see how talented we are and how many runs we can go on, and then let teams back in.”

Wa-Hi posted up Mikayla Ferenz for six points as the Blue Devils closed out the first quarter with a 10-7 lead.

“That (posting up) was a good decision on Mrs. Meliah’s part,” Mikayla Ferenz said. “It worked out.”

The Bulldogs fought back to cut the Wa-Hi lead to 20-19 at intermission, but the Blue Devils got a trey from Jaiden Hodnefield to spark a 7-0 run to open the second half and expand the lead to 27-19 with 6:30 left in the third. Liddy Valle scored seven of her team-leading 14 to get the Bulldogs back in it and cut the lead to 29-28 with 1:11 left in the third.

“Defensively, we can turn it on when we want to,” Meliah said of the second half opening. “I think we get tired or start to relax and that’s when other teams can take advantage of us. Good teams figure out how to continue those runs instead of being up and down. That’s something we talked about.”

Mikayla Ferenz drained two free throws and scored on a breakaway lay-in that beat the third-quarter buzzer and the Blue Devils had breathing room with a 33-28 lead heading to the fourth.

“It’s like a reality check,” Mikayla Ferenz said of the Bulldogs’ rally. “(We thought) ‘oh, my gosh it’s not happening again’. (We decided) it’s ending now. (The buzzer beater) kind of got the team pumped up.”

The Blue Devils turned to defense and limited the Bulldogs to 2-of-11 shooting from the floor over the last eight minutes. Mikayla Ferenz chipped in seven of her game-high 23 and the Blue Devils pulled away for the win.

“The fourth quarter was the best basketball that we played,” Meliah said. “We executed, we were patient, we decided to pass the ball around, and then everything was in rhythm. That’s when we started making some shots.”

Wa-Hi held Pasco to 12-of-42 shooting from the floor and held Pasco’s Siera Perez, who scored 38 in a 74-73 loss to Hanford Friday, to only four points.

“(My job) was to keep her (Perez) in front,” Mikayla Ferenz said. “I had to have my hands up at all times so if she decided to launch I was there.”

Maddy Sirmon pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds as Wa-Hi won for the fifth consecutive time and improved to 3-1 in conference and 7-3 overall.

At Southridge Friday, the Blue Devils went on a 16-5 second-quarter run to take control and lead the Suns 30-18 at the half.

Wa-Hi held off a 16-11 Suns’ third-quarter run, and went on to post a 55-40 win. The Blue Devils had three in double digits led by the 21 from Mikayla Ferenz. Kate Ferenz added 13 and Madi Doepker, in her first game back from a back injury, added 10.

Blue Devils travel to Hanford Friday and to Richland Saturday.
