Pacific stymies Whitman rally

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Whitman came back from 12 points down midway through the second half only to see Pacific University win by one point, 66-65, in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game tonight at Stoller Center.

The Missionaries (6-5, 1-1 NWC) trailed 54-42 with 11:18 remaining in the game. Whitman then put together a flurry, outscoring the Boxers 10 to nothing over the next 5:01 to draw to within two.

Whitman tied the game up for the 11th time when Matt Mounier drilled a 3-pointer to make the score 57-all with 4:11 left to play. The Missionaries took the lead 59-57 moments later after a layup by Evan Martin.

The Boxers drew even on a Cameron Hayes jumper only to see Whitman take the lead again, 61-59, on another layup by Martin. The Boxers would tie it up again on a Coby Proctor bucket.

With fourteen seconds remaining and the Whits down by one, Whitman’s Josh Duckworth was fouled and sank both free throws to give the Missionaries a one-point lead, 65-64, but with seven seconds left, Pacific’s Jordan Batey was fouled. Batey proceeded to hit both free throws to give the Boxers the final margin. Duckworth fired up a jumper at the buzzer but it was off the mark.

Whitman got 16 points from Mounier and 14 from Tochi Oti. Philip Chircu and Duckworth also added eight.

The Missionaries split their conference opening road trip, downing Willamette Friday night, 65-59, and next host Puget Sound Friday and Pacific Lutheran University Saturday.
