A free awards ceremony and reception open to the public will recognize the second annual Volunteer of the Year for College Place at 5 p.m. Jan. 12 in the College Place Lions Club building, 801 S.E. Larch St.
Friends, families and neighbors of the award nominees are encouraged to attend.
Carl Walk, Lions Club president said his club honors volunteer service to College Place with the Nichols Award for Public Service. One of the Nichols honorees will be selected as the College Place Volunteer of the Year at the ceremony.
The Nichols honorees for 2013 include Nikolai Morrison of Boy Scout Troop 312, Paul McClain of SOS Health Services, Pam Deccio of College Place Schools and from the SonBridge Community Center, Jane Hinton, Aileen Bauer, Lynn Cummins, Paul Linebaugh, Maxine Hargreaves, Eileen Curtis, Maylene Russell, Dave Russell, Martha Newbold and Pat Gustin.
“Like all service clubs, the Lions contribute money back to their community. Checks from the Lions and other donors will be given in the name of The Volunteer of the Year and several of the Nichols Award recipients to the organizations to which they provide service,” Carl said.
The College Place Lions Club earns most of its funds by renting the Lions Club building to community members. “With that money we help care for vision-related problems in our town and help out other organizations and charities in the good work they do. It’s a circle of giving,” Carl said.
This Lions group meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the Lions Clubhouse.
