ATHENA — The Union girls basketball team jumped out to a 23-12 first-quarter lead and didn’t look back from there, as the Bobcats downed Weston-McEwen 64-56.

The TigerScots chipped away at the Union lead, as Weston-McEwen responded with a 17-9 advantage in the second quarter, but the Bobcats’ advantage at the free-throw line guided them to the win.

“About midway through the first quarter we had some defensive hiccups and Union made us pay,” TigerScots coach Amber Doremus said. “From then on it was a battle to get back within single digits. We had our chances in the fourth (but) shots weren’t falling. Then we put Union to the free throw line.”

Union nailed 14-of-31 at the charity stripe, as the Bobcats had two players finish with more than 18 points.

Weston-McEwen’s Molly von Borstel led the TigerScots with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Taryn Coffman also chipped in 14 points and Ammarae Broncheau added 10.

The TigerScots square off with Pilot Rock on Friday.
