WALLA WALLA — The City Council on Wednesday selected Jerry Cummins as mayor, a two-year position the longtime councilman has held three times previously since 1995.

Cummins received four votes, from Council members Jim Barrow, Chris Plucker, Allen Pomraning and himself.

The only other mayoral nominee was Council member Barbara Clark, who received three votes, from Mary Lou Jenkins, Dick Morgan and herself.

When it came time to pick mayor pro-tem, a three-way bid transpired for what is essentially the fill-in mayor job.

Mayor Cummins nominated Plucker.

Clark nominated Jenkins.

And Morgan nominated Pomraning.

Last week Pomraning went on the record with an email to his colleagues that he wanted to be mayor pro-tem.

Plucker won mayor pro-tem with three votes, from Cummins, Barrow and himself.

Jenkins and Pomraning each received votes from their nominators and themselves.

Unfortunately for bicyclists in Walla Walla the man that has been consistently opposed to building roads for cyclists is now mayor, again. The man who flipped from supporting the engineering report on Rose St. to bending to a vocal minority is now mayor pro-tem. Hopefully, both will reconsider when the next phase of our tax dollars will be spent.
