WALLA WALLA — The 2014 Seattle Mariners Caravan rolls into Whitman College’s Sherwood Center next Thursday with pitchers Charlie Furbush and Brandon Maurer, former M’s player and current broadcaster Mike Blowers and the Mariners Moose in attendance.
A free autograph session, along with photos with the Mariners Moose and prize giveaways, will run from 4:15-5:45 p.m. in Sherwood Center’s main gym.
The Caravan makes stops in 27 Pacific Northwest communities between Jan. 7-24, presenting assemblies for elementary school students, visiting hospitals and hosting the autograph and photograph sessions.
M’s pitcher Maurer recorded his first Major League win on April 14 against the Texas Rangers. He split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen last season, and spent most of June and July with the Mariners’ Triple A affiliate Tacoma Rainiers.
Left-handed relief pitcher Furbush had a busy 2013, appearing in a team-high 71 games. He averaged 11.08 strikeouts per nine innings pitched and held opponents to a .199 batting average.
Blowers is entering his eighth season as the Mariner television analyst. He did three tours as a Mariners player (1992-95, 1997, 1999).
During his 11 year Major League career, Blowers also played for the Yankees (1989-91), Dodgers (1996), and Athletics (1998). He was a stand-out at Bethel High School in Spanaway, Wash., and was a Pac-10 Triple Crown winner while with the University of Washington.
