Warrior women cruise after halftime

PENDLETON — Confusion at the scorer’s table left Walla Walla Community College’s women’s team without starting forward Amy DeLong for most of the second half against Blue Mountain here Wednesday night.

But the Warriors overcame the adversity, pulling away from a 31-all halftime stalemate to hand the Timberwolves an NWAACC East Region-opening 84-74 defeat.

“They’re pretty good,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said of Blue Mountain, which is coached by former Warrior player Christy Martin. “We just hung in there the whole game.”

Hazeltine said DeLong was tagged with a foul with 13 minutes remaining in the game, and the scorer’s table declared it was her fifth, fouling her out.

“There was a discrepancy in the book,” Hazeltine said. “Kids with four fouls with 13 minutes left are on the bench.

“We played most of the second half without her, and we played really, really well without her,” she said. “That’s a big, big thing that we can still beat a good Blue Mountain team. They had lots of runs down the stretch, but we withstood them.”

Bailey Nygaard stepped in after DeLong’s ejection to put up 33 points, including 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.

“She just played so well,” Hazeltine said. “She was fouled down the stretch, and made all her free throws.”

Jessica Siler scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

“She had probably the best game of her career last night,” Hazeltine said. “She made some big shots for us.”

Mar’Shay Moore had 24 points for the Timberwolves, with Hailey Markham-Patti recording 20.

“It’s always tough to go to Blue Mountain and play,” Hazeltine said. “We feel pretty fortunate to get the win on the road, and now we get ready for Treasure Valley on Saturday.”

The Warriors host the Chukars at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“We didn’t have a great preseason, but we grew up a lot last night,” Hazeltine said. “Anytime you get a win over there (in Pendleton), you have to be happy. We just have to keep it going. We played with a lot of confidence last night. It was good to see.”
