Warriors rout Blue Mountain

PENDLETON — Walla Walla’s depth paid off big time here Wednesday night as the Warriors opened men’s NWAACC Eastern Region basketball play with a 111-76 victory over Blue Mountain.

The Warriors, who lost sophomore guard Eric Harr to a season-ending injury several weeks ago, found themselves without another sophomore starting guard, Caleb Bravard, in their East opener because Bravard had been diagnosed with acute bronchitis earlier in the day.

Then, about 11 minutes into the game, sophomore point guard Seth Alden came out of the game with a recurrence of a concussion injury that has plagued him throughout the season. And midway in the second half, freshman sharpshooter Prince Lacey, the team’s sixth man and second-leading scorer, sprained his ankle and retired to the bench.

“All of a sudden we were down to eight guys,” WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. “I’ve been saying all year long that we are deep at the guard position, and it’s a good thing because we are struggling to stay healthy.”

Led by Prince, who tallied 17 points before spraining his ankle, the Warriors’ bench accounted for 51 points and outscored the Timberwolves’ reserves by 31 points. Backups Joel Underdahl and Matt Grooms finished with 12 points each for WWCC and Garret Sawyer and Nate Richards came off the bench to contribute 11 points each.

Walla Walla’s Satchel Schetzle led all scorers with 20 points and Alden, who scored the team’s first 13 points of the game, left with 15 points to give the Warriors seven players in double figures.

“Joel Underdahl came in and played really well,” Reinland said. “Matt Grooms played a great game, not only scoring but holding down one of Blue Mountain’s best rebounders. Matt Prince gave us a big lift off the bench as usual, and so did Garret Sawyer and Nate Richards.”

The Timberwolves were led by Darius Butler’s 18 points. Dylan Martin and Brandon Davis finished with 14 points apiece.

Walla Walla moved above the .500 mark and will take an 8-7 season record into Saturday’s game against Treasure Valley in the Dietrich Dome. Reinland isn’t sure who will be available and who might miss the game.

“We’re real worried about Seth Alden,” the coach said. “He’s going to talk to his parents and then talk to me, and I think there’s a chance he might not play again because of the concussions.

“Caleb Bravard is really sick, and we’re going to hold him out of practice today and maybe Friday as well and hope he can go Saturday. Prince Lacey’s ankle doesn’t seem to be too serious. He was moving around on it pretty well after the game and probably could have played if we had needed him.”

Treasure Valley opened league play Wednesday with an 80-78 victory over Columbia Basin in Ontario, Ore. The Chukars are one of the favorites to win this year’s East title, according to Reinland.

“Treasure Valley is very good,” Reinland said. “They have three sophomore guards who are very athletic. It’s a really big test for us.

“Hopefully we will be going at it with more than eight guys.”
