WALLA WALLA — Matt Mounier scored 22 points as Whitman claimed its eighth win in its last 10 games — a 74-60 victory over Pacific Lutheran — in Northwest Conference men’s basketball action Saturday night on George Ball Court at Sherwood Center.

Reserve Dominic Lippi added 16 points and Tochi Oti tallied 12 for the Missionaries.

On Friday, Whitman held off Puget Sound for a 94-87 overtime triumph.

With its weekend sweep Whitman raised its NWC record to 3-1 and its overall mark to 8-5.

The only losses during the Missionaries’ current stretch came to No. 1-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point and conference rival Pacific University.

The Missionaries forged a 10-2 lead in the first 2:27 of play. Mounier rainbowed in a 25-foot 3-pointer from straight above the arc at the 17:33 mark for Whitman points eight, nine and 10.

PLU twice built six-point margins, 21-15 and 24-18, midway through the half before the Missionaries closed the period with a 17-7 spurt. Back-to-back 3s by Josh Duckworth and Lippi started the surge over the last 4:51 of the period that sent Whitman into halftime with a four-point edge, 35-31.

Whitman furthered its lead to 10, 58-48, with 9:15 left on two free throws by Mounier.

The Missionaries continued to maintain and build on their margin the rest of the way before settling for the final 14-point spread.

“PLU is good,” Whitman coach Eric Bridgeland said. “They’re well coached and a tough team to beat. But I’m proud of our guys to get and build on the lead in the second half.”

Whitman blew an 18-point, second-half lead on Friday, but made six free throws in the final 31.3 seconds of overtime to hold off UPS in a game bogged down by 60 fouls and 84 charity tosses between the two teams.

Mounier scored 19 points to pace the Missionaries’ offensive output against Puget Sound.

“We kept our composure and knew what we had to do to win the game,” Mounier said. We’ve been battle-tested.”

The Missionaries travel to the Willamette Valley next weekend for conference counters with Linfield on Friday and George Fox Saturday.
