WAITSBURG — The Walla Walla Valley Academy boys basketball team had four players finish in double figures in the Knights’ 66-58 win against Waitsburg-Prescott on Monday.

Dustin Rose led the way, as he finished with 16 points and a trio of 3-pointers. Matt Cosaert added 15 points on the strength of foul shooting, as he knocked down 7-of-9 at the charity stripe.

“(It’s) always fun to play at W-P, but tough to win,” WWVA coach Scott Wagner said. “(I’m) proud of the guys for the total team effort in practice preparing for this tough run of league games.”

Malcolm Shaw also knocked down three triples en route to 13 points.

Wagner also credited Cameron Fitzgerald, who came up with 11 points.

The Knights used a big second quarter to pull away from W-P, as WWVA outscored Waitsburg-Prescott 18-6 in the second frame.

Waitsburg-Prescott head coach Tavis Crittenden said both Corey Brownlee and Owen Lanning got in foul trouble early, which forced Crittenden to sit two of his starters for a majority of the second frame.

“The second quarter is what won it for them,” Crittenden said. “We played with them in every quarter but that’s the quarter that killed us. We got away from going to the post because Corey wasn’t there. We really got away from what was working in the first quarter. We had starters on the bench and we had young guys on the floor trying to score.”

W-P rallied in the third to post 21 points, but the Knights kept pace with their free throw shooting. Walla Walla Valley Academy finished 16-of-28 at the line.

After only scoring two points in the first half, Owen Lanning finished with a game-high 21 points for Waitsburg-Prescott including a pair of 3-pointers. He dropped 15 points in the final frame. Devin Acevedo added 11 points on two 3’s of his own.

The Knights return to action against Tri-Cities Prep on Saturday.

Waitsburg-Presscot heads to Milton-Freewater to play McLoughlin High School on today.
