Dayton girls rally past Lions JV

DAYTON — The Dayton girls basketball team overcame a miserable first quarter to rally for a 44-32 win against the Kennewick junior varsity team on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs came up with only two points in the opening quarter, but the Dayton defense held strong and restricted the Lions to only five points during the same stretch.

“We were just out of sync offensively and I couldn’t put my finger on it,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said. “(Our) timing was off on the offensive end. I was pleased with the fact that we got out and defended and got some easy buckets in transition, which was the difference in the ballgame.”

After a slow start, the Bulldogs (11-4 overall, 4-1 in Southeast 2B) posted 18 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 20-13 heading into halftime. Strong said the team talked about better spacing offensively and using its defense to set up easy transition looks.

Lexie Ramirez led the way for the Bulldogs, as she scored 14 points, hauled in eight rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists. Madison Mings also added 11 on 5-of-11 shooting.

“Last night statistically it showed up but she’s been playing really well for us all year,” Strong said of Ramirez. “She’s taken on more of a responsibility. She shares the basketball. Last night it was her turn to score and she followed that up with rebounding the basketball and distributing it too.”

The Bulldogs finished with 15 assists on 17 field goals. Strong said the high assist to field goal ratio has been typical throughout the season and credited his players for their unselfish play.

“I think they like playing with each other and I think they like sharing the basketball,” he said. “I think they recognize the value of balance on our team this year. No one girl is going to put up 25 (points) one night, but they’re all capable of it and I think they’re excited when one of them does, knowing the next night it could be them.”

The Bulldogs face Tri-Cities Prep on Friday before squaring off with DeSales on Saturday.
