KENNEWICK — Wa-Hi’s boys basketball team advanced its Mid-Columbia Conference record to 5-3 and improved to 9-5 overall with two victories over the weekend.

The Blue Devils prevailed at Kennewick, 67-51, Saturday night after nipping Kamiakin at home on Friday, 44-41.

Gabe Porter scored 20 points to lead the Wa-Hi charge against Kennewick and Eric Klicker added 18. The two combined to hit 8-of-15 shots from 3-point range.

The Blue Devils led 26-20 after the first quarter, stretched the lead in the middle two frames, and kept the game out of Kennewick’s reach by going 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

“We started out hitting some shots,” Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. “Klicker and Porter hit some shots.

“We had to tighten the defense up,” Golden said. “We got some stops. We figured some things out in the second half defensively.

“It was a good team effort,” Golden said. “I was proud of the kids.”

When looking back at Friday’s win, Golden said, “We didn’t shoot well, but we were able to string some stops together. Ross (Lake) had a couple of critical blocked shots.”

Lake also contributed 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Wa-Hi.

The Blue Devils host Southridge Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
