Whitman men capture two road wins

NEWBERG, Ore. — The Whitman College men’s basketball team capitalized on George Fox University’s costly errors to drub the Bruins on their home turf, 93-69, on Saturday.

Whitman went into the game tied with Lewis & Clark College and Whitworth College for first place in the conference with a 4-1 record. After this win, their fourth straight, Whitman takes sole possession of the No. 1 spot in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

A combination of forced turnovers and red-hot shooting overpowered the Bruins. Whitman led by as much as 31 points during the contest. Whitman’s stifling full-court press caused 17 turnovers in the first half alone. The Bruins had 28 turnovers in the game.

George Fox led by as many as six in the first half, but Whitman went on a 12-0 run before halftime. Matt Mounier scored nine of his 13 first-half points during the run. Whitman took full advantage of the extra opportunities created by turnovers to take a 48-32 lead going into the locker room.

Center Philip Chircu was on fire, scoring 14 points and going 3-for-3 from the arc in the first half. The Missionaries were 9-for-16 from the 3-point arc in the first stanza, and 13-for-24 for the game. Chircu finished with a game-high 22 points, going 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from long range.

Mounier finished the game with 18 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Whitman also bested Linfield 73-53 on Friday. Tochi Oti led the way with 19 points in his 20 minutes of work. Evan Martin also added 13 points.

The Whitman men improve their record to 5-1 in the conference, 10-5 overall. They will host Whitworth College at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
