Irish girls turn tide on Riverside

BOARDMAN, Ore. — One night after a strong showing in a 55-38 victory over Tekoa-Oakesdale in the DeSales gym, the Irish were off their game here Tuesday night.

They managed just two points in a ragged first quarter and trailed Riverside 17-15 at halftime of the non-league game. But a dominant third quarter turned the tide as DeSales prevailed 42-28 in its fourth game in five days.

“We didn’t get out of the gate,” DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. “It was our fourth game in the last five days and I think we were feeling it a little bit.

“We had a tremendous effort on Monday against Tekoa, but we were a little flat last night.”

Sophomore Emily Baumgart scored all nine of her points in the second half and junior Hannah Leahy tallied all of her five points after the intermission to get DeSales’ offense untracked.

“I thought Emily and Hannah were the difference in the second half,” Duncan said.

Senior Ashlyn Lyons was steady throughout for the Irish with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Stacia Deal also had seven rebounds for DeSales, which held a 37-24 advantage on the glass.

Samantha Hernandez scored six points to lead the Pirates and Marissa Pratt and Jenna Shimer added five points each. Pratt also collected six rebounds.

Irish senior Allison Wujek scored just two points in the game as she was saddled with foul trouble throughout. She played perhaps 10 minutes, Duncan said, and fouled out with five minutes remaining in the game and the Irish up by nine points.

“Not having Allison in there hurt us some,” Duncan said. “Especially when teams are playing a zone against us. But we were able to work through it in the second half.”

DeSales improved to 12-3 overall. The Irish take a 6-1 Southeast 2B District record into a Saturday night game at Waitsburg-Prescott.
