Oscar A. Mercer of Milton-Freewater passed away Jan. 19, 2014, at the home of his grandson in Milton-Freewater at the age of 105 years. Memorial services will be Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater.
Mr. Mercer was born Nov. 20, 1908, in Prosser, Wash., the son of Jim and Ida Mercer. He grew up and attended school in Prosser. After his schooling he began working in the farming industry. On Dec. 8, 1934, he married Roberta Badgett in Prosser. The couple moved to Milton-Freewater in the 1950s. Mr. Mercer worked for many years for Key Brothers. He enjoyed the mountains, hunting, working and sharing the vegetables he grew with friends and neighbors. Mrs. Mercer preceded him in death on March 24, 1976.
He is survived by five grandchildren, Rick Mercer, Diane Sheets and Anna Manson all of Milton-Freewater, Betty Nettleton of Dayton, Oscar Nettleton of Fruitland, Idaho; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Mercer of Milton-Freewater; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Mercer was preceded in death by a son, Art Mercer; his parents; and two sisters, Goldie Case and Marie Tipman.
