WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi improved its Mid-Columbia Conference girls basketball record to 10-1 and its overall mark to 14-3 Saturday night with a 57-41 victory over Hanford in the Blue Devil gym.

Madi Doepker, Kate Ferenz, and Mikayla Ferenz scored 15 points apiece for Wa-Hi while Jaiden Hodnefield added eight. Doepker was 6-of-7 from the field and Kate Ferenz was 5-of-6.

On Friday, Doepker tallied 21 points in a 67-42 Blue Devil rout at Pasco.

“We had balanced scoring,” Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said after Saturday’s win. “It’s important for four of our starters to be at or close to double digits.”

Wa-Hi never trailed against Hanford. Kate Ferenz hit a 3-point shot at the 6:44 mark of the opening quarter to open the game’s scoring and added another trey with 3:31 on the clock to end a 10-2 Blue Devil spurt to begin the contest.

The Blue Devils led 14-7 after one quarter.

Hodnefield drained a 3-point goal with 6:21 left in the second quarter to extend Wa-Hi’s lead to 14, 21-7.

The Blue Devil cushion reached 16, 24-8, on a Mikayla Ferenz free throw with 5:30 remaining before halftime.

Wa-Hi held a 13-point margin, 30-17, at intermission.

A pair of charity tosses by Hannah Thompson completed a 13-5 spurt by Hanford over the first five-and-a-half minutes and change of the third quarter that reduced the Blue Devils’ lead to five, 35-30.

But baskets by Kate Ferenz and Mikayla Ferenz in the final 1:53 of the period gave Wa-Hi a nine-point spread, 39-30, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils closed out the game with a 15-6 surge over the final 6:46 of play. Mikayla Ferenz scored six points during the run.

“Hanford is a really good team,” Meliah said. “We knew it was going to be a battle. The girls battled hard. It was a tough game, but we did what we wanted to do. Our defense was solid and we executed well offensively.”

The Falcons shot just 32 percent from the field (16-of-50). Colette Gall, who scored a career-high 30 points on Friday night in Hanford’s 67-62 victory over Richland, was limited to 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting.

“Gall is a good player,” Meliah said. “We wanted to limit her touches as much as possible and get our hands up on other shooters. For the most part, we forced them into more difficult shots.”

Wa-Hi’s next game is Friday when it hosts Richland.
