MILTON-FREEWATER — The McLoughlin High girls basketball team fell just short here Tuesday night in a battle with the Umatilla Vikings, 40-32.

The Pioneers finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds from Makia Carlson, along with nine points and eight boards from fellow post Amanda Rhoads.

Mac-Hi’s post duo wasn’t enough, however, and they were overtaken by 15 points from Umatilla’s Aleesha Watson, nine from Kasandra Galbraith and seven from Desiree Garza.

The Pioneers did outrebound the Vikings, 34-21.

The problem lay in turnovers, where Mac-Hi had 18 to Umatilla’s 11.

Mac-Hi trailed by 10 at halftime, was outscored 13-10 in the third quarter, and held the Vikings to six fourth-period points, but the rally wasn’t enough.

Mac-Hi’s halftime deficit quickly ballooned to 16 on two Umatilla 3-pointers just after the intermission.

“It was something that we talked about during halftime,” Mac-Hi coach Todd Cunnington said, “getting out on them on their 3s. We missed our assignments more than a couple of times.

“We recovered well after that, but, yeah, those 3s hurt,” he said. “I liked how resilient the girls were because sometimes in the past we would get down on ourselves and the game would get out of hand. We stuck in there and I was proud of our girls.”

The Pioneers slowly fought their way back in the third quarter, to trail by 13 going into the final quarter.

At the start of the fourth, Carlson scored nine unanswered points to pull the Pioneers within four points with four minutes to go.

Carlson sat down for a breather, as she was subbed out for a minute of game clock, and the Vikings took the lead back to eight on two free throws by Iridana Campos and a putback hoop by Watson.

Cunnington called timeout, put Carlson back in, but the Pioneers were unable to regain the momentum.

The Pioneers (0-2 GOL, 5-11 overall) travel to Baker on Friday for a Greater Oregon League matchup.

The Vikings (12-7) will hit the hardwood in Vale Saturday.
