Dr. Paul McLain, one of 13 honorees of the Nichols Award for Public Service was named College Place’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year at a ceremony hosted and sponsored by College Place Lions Club.

Janae Henry nominated her colleague for the honor, writing that “Dr. McLain shows steadfast loyalty and determination in his service hours and opportunities. He is an outstanding and generous mentor to his peers and other volunteers in our clinic. He continuously shows his deep love and compassion for helping others — by his dedicated hours of service and his self-sacrifices.

“As our medical director, he is not required to ensure our clinic is open, but he will work alone and long hours for us just to allow our clinic doors to open and our many needy patients to be seen in a timely manner.”

After he received his award from Carl Walk, Lions Club president, Dr. McLain praised the other volunteers from the SOS Clinic/SonBridge complex saying, “We really live in a culture of volunteerism down there. It’s wonderful! It’s a satisfying and gratifying place in which to serve. On behalf of all of those nominated and all of those who volunteer, this is why I get a chance to accept this. Thank you for that. When we’re talking about the spirit of volunteerism how about the College Place Lions Club? Thanks for what you do to make the community and everyone else’s life richer. God is good. God has given us so many things through all of his love and His grace to us and in Jesus Christ. Really I think that is what we are celebrating tonight. So I’m just really just grateful to be a part of that with every one of you.”

The 2013 Nichols Award Honorees from the SonBridge Community Center included Jane Hinton, Aileen Bauer, Lynn Cummins, Paul Linebaugh, Maxine Hargreaves, Eileen Curtis, Maylene Russell, Dave Russell, Martha Newbold and Pat Gustin. Also honored were Nikolai Morrison of Boy Scout Troop 312 and Pam Deccio of the College Place School District.

Carl Walk said, “For the second year we have honored members of our community, nominated by their peers, who provide volunteer service to our community.”
