CENTRALIA — The Northwest Xplosion girls fastpitch team completed the Washington Amateur Softball Association 14U “A” State Tournament with a 6-2 record, good enough for third place.
The 27 team double-elimination tournament took place Friday through Sunday at Borst Park in Centralia
On Friday, Xplosion opened play with an 8-1 win over Kaos, as Xplosion outhit the Kaos 15-5 and took advantage of three Kaos errors.
In the second game on Friday, Xplosion beat the Ellensburg Canes, 12-0. After scoring nine runs in the bottom of the third inning, the game ended due to the mercy rule after three and a half innings.
On Saturday, Xplosion took their 2-0 record against the Snohomish SWAT, falling 5-4.
Xplosion allowed three runs in the top of the first on two SWAT hits and two Xplosion errors. That score stood until the bottom of the third, when Xplosion’s Teisha Payne reached base safely on a bunt single and then was driven in on a single by Kamryn Coleman to make it 3-1.
Xplosion tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Emma Case.
SWAT then added a run in both the fifth and seventh innings to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
But Xplosion wouldn’t go down easy, and after a Case single and back-to-back triples by Payne and Coleman, the score stood 5-4 with the tying run at third base. A fly ball to shortstop by Madsion Hooper ended the Xplosion threat and sent them to the losers bracket.
Xplosion won their next two games on Saturday, beating Snohomish County Express, 7-6, and Washington Acers, 10-5.
With the two wins late Saturday, Xplosion needed three straight wins on Sunday to make the championship game.
Xplosion faced the Raptors ‘99 in their first game on Sunday, and thanks to two hits apiece for Lauren Hoe, Faith Hoe and Coleman, Xplosion cruised to a 9-3 win.
In the second game on Sunday, Xplosion faced the Spokane Crash in its fourth consecutive loser-out contest, and thanks to 16 Xplosion hits and a great pitching performance by Xplosion pitcher Ashlee Vadala, they took a 7-0 win over the Crash to force a rematch with the Snohomish SWAT in a game where the winner would earn a spot in the championship game.
In the rematch, Xplosion again spotted the SWAT two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, as SWAT took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Xplosion scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead, but the SWAT scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach as the game ended via the time limit in the fifth inning with SWAT taking a 9-5 victory.
The 6-2 tournament record brings the season record for Xplosion to 46-13-5.
Next up for Northwest Xplosion is the ASA National Tournament July 28-Aug. 3 in San Diego.
