Letter - Elect most qualified, educated candidate

When Walla Walla needs a leader, we want and deserve the best. When looking for a city manager, school superintendent or police chief, we scour the nation for the most qualified person.

It does not matter where they are from, as long as they are the best available.

So why should our standards for the sheriff be any different? We don’t need a good ol’ boy or the nicest person, we need the most qualified and educated individual willing to do the job.

That is why I am voting for Sheriff John Turner.

Sometimes qualifications and education can come from other area's than a classroom and diploma hanging on a wall.

Qualifications are highly overrated. At the Chamber of Commerce Debate Sheriff Turner repeatedly mentioned his law degree as a strength. He spoke that perhaps he'd missed his true calling as a lawyer to one question. Let's look at his "labor" record and how well this "qualification" has worked during his term of office.

June 14, 2012 Sheriff Turner fires and employee for misconduct. A judge will rule that Sheriff Turner did not fire the employee for any "misconduct" that is known to law. Walla Walla County paid $235,000 settlement.

Sheriff Turner uses medical information that should be protected under HIPPA if not L&I confidentiality, for adversarial electoral advantage. Think on that!

Either Mr. Turner doesn't understand the nature of Washington State L&I and his obligations as the employer, which is not his same role as Sheriff, or he is willing to misrepresent our L&I system to the Public. Think on that! He is willing to misinform the public and undermine a State Agency for political advantage.

When Sheriff Turner says, "labor law" don't mistake this for his honest and fair-dealing of employees. Don't mistake a law degree for ethical, fair, and honest dealing. Sheriff Turner hasn't.

Spot on Chas and there are several other expenditures paid by the county relative to labor practices that could have been avoided.

More trash talk from supporters of candidates with less qualifications.

Cooper is the one who caused additional expenditures for the Sheriff's Office by filing NO MERIT grievances. THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS.
