WALLA WALLA — An area woman has been arrested on charges she tried to abduct her young children from their adoptive mother in College Place last month.
Deneca R. Jones, 33, of 214 Harmon St., Waitsburg, is charged in Walla Walla County Superior Court with two counts of second-degree attempted kidnapping.
The charges were filed July 15 and a summons was issued for her to make her first court appearance Aug. 11.
However, officials trying to serve the summons couldn’t find her. A warrant then was issued for her arrest, with bail set at $10,000.
She was tracked down and transported from the Columbia County Jail to the Walla Walla County Jail on Monday.
Officials say Jones went to the 500 block of West Whitman Drive in College Place about 6:15 p.m. June 14 and screamed outside the adoptive mother’s residence to give her her babies.
Jones was near the adoptive mother’s car in her driveway when the adoptive mother ran outside, according to a police report filed in court.
One child, age 9, and a niece had locked themselves inside the vehicle.
Jones again started screaming to give her her babies, and when the adoptive mother asked her to leave, replied, “Oh, I’ll be back! And this isn’t over!” the police report says.
Jones left in her vehicle, but a College Place police officer chased her to North College Avenue adjacent to Northwest B Street, warned and released her on her own recognizance.
The other child is 7 years old.
The children had been placed in foster care with the adoptive mother — whose name is not revealed in court documents — in 2009 and the legal rights of the birth parents were terminated in February 2010, according to the police report.
