WALLA WALLA — A new coalition focusing on the prevention of underage drinking and other drug use will introduce itself to the community during its National Night Out Against Crime event Aug. 5.
Information about the group, W2 for Drug Free Youth, will be presented and members to join the coalition to plan and support programs will be sought, said Peggy Needham, community prevention and wellness initiative coordinator for Trilogy Recovery Community.
The program is an effort by the Department of Social and Health Services to support new or existing coalitions that put parents, health and government professionals and faith leaders in the ring against drug use.
“A number of factors were considered in selecting Walla Walla for services, (which) included alcohol availability and favorable attitudes toward drug use,” Needham said.
A number of local retailers have been cited for selling to teens, Needham noted, citing two recent licensing enforcement operations in which nine out of 20 local retailers checked sold alcohol or tobacco to youths. As well, some Walla Walla parents also supply teens with alcohol and tobacco, she said.
