Minutes - Milton-Freewater School Board - 6/16/14


Board members are Mike Lesko, McKenzie Marly, Duane Geyer, Don Miller, Kelly Kessler, Tim McElrath and Tara Lewis. With McElrath and Geyer absent Monday, the board:

BUDGET: Adopted a $23.8 million budget for the 2014-15 school year, up $400,000 from the current budget. The new budget includes $19 million for the general fund, $2.5 million for special revenues, $1.6 million for debt service and $806,867 for capital projects. Also approved a supplemental budget resolution to move $300,000 into a reserve account until litigation between the state and the Oregon Education Association regarding the Public Employees Retirement System is settled. Unanimous.

GRAD REQUIREMENTS: Reviewed first draft of proposal to increase graduation requirements for students in the class of 2018. If approved, honors diplomas will require 27 credits (up from 26) and Mac-Hi diplomas 25 (up from 24). The change will also require a 2.0 grade-point average for Mac-Hi diplomas. There are no GPA requirements currently for the Mac-Hi diploma. Unanimous.

TEXTBOOKS: Adopted English language arts textbooks for K-12 grade levels. For K-5, the district adopted “Imagine It!” published by SRA/McGraw-Hill. For 6-12, the district adopted “Collections” published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Unanimous.

FOOD SERVICE: Awarded five-year, $5 million food service contract to Sodexo USA, the sole bidder. Unanimous.

CONTRACTS: Approved collective bargaining agreements for district staff. Unanimous.

OTHER ACTION: Approved change in board meeting calendar to second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.; kept Mike Lesko and Tim McElrath as chairman and vice chairman, respectively; approved cooperative sponsorship to allow Athena-Weston athletes to compete on the wrestling and girls soccer teams; approved changes in pay for substitutes, approved seven board policy updates; approved volunteer coaches. Unanimous.

CONSENT: Approved consent agenda consisting of May 13 minutes, May financial reports, hires and resignations, extra duty contracts.
