Longtime community activist Ned Shafer dies


A former director of the Walla Walla YMCA whose community spirit was key to the successes of the annual Peach Basket Classic basketball tournament and Rotary Club tree planting efforts has died.

Ned Shafer, 71, died Feb. 26 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, according to his family. He was 71.

He was the director of the Walla Walla YMCA for 33 years and a member of Rotary and co-chaired the Tree Planting Committee, planting thousands of trees for the Walla Walla community.

In his honor, the Walla Walla YMCA will be closed April 27 for a celebration of life, begin at 2:30 p.m. in the main gym.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Shafer, and five children.

His obituary is scheduled to run in Sunday’s Union-Bulletin.
