Pomeroy’s Riley Bott goes up for two of his 15 points against Wellpinit in the state quarterfinals in Spokane on Thursday. The Pirates won 62-38.

SPOKANE — Pomeroy withstood a first-quarter emotional charge from Wellpinit in quarterfinal state Class 1B boys basketball action at the Spokane Arena Thursday.

The Redskins jumped to a 17-16 lead after one quarter, but it was all Pirates the rest of the way. Pomeroy moved into today’s semifinal action with a 62-38 win. The Pirates face Neah Bay, a 68-60 winner over Tulalip Heritage, this afternoon at 3:45.

“We kind of expected that (Wellpinit’s first quarter),” Pirates coach Brian Koller said. “This is their first trip in a couple of years. We figured they would come out and be pretty excited. They hit some shots. It was a good first quarter, back and forth.”

Riley Bott drained a Pirate 3-pointer from the right corner and Cody LaMunyan hit a baseline jumper as Pomeroy raced to a 5-0 a minute in. Behind two treys from Brodie Ford, Wellpinit answered to take a 6-5 lead with 5:40 left in the first.

One tie and four lead changes later, Ford had the ball with Wellpinit down 16-14, Ford capped his 11-point quarter with a buzzer-beater 3, and Wellpinit took the 17-16 lead after one quarter.

Bott, with two treys, and LaMunyan with six points, led the Pirates through the opening stanza.

“We knew they would be a really fast team,” LaMunyan said. “They would shoot 3s (3-of-3 in the first eight minutes), and crash offensive rebounds.”

The Redskins carried out their attack over the first quarter, but the Pirates shut it down from there.

Ford scored three more points to finish with a team-leading 14.

Pomeroy blanked Wellpinit from the field (0-of-12) in the second quarter, and the Pirates went on a 17-2 run to take control at the break with a 33-19 lead.

“We tightened down on defense,” LaMunyan said of the Pirate second-quarter defense. “We knew No. 20 (Ford) was their score guy. We had to help out on him. We had to get our hands on balls and get defensive rebounds. Our defense stepped up.”

On offense, Max Ruchert came off the Pirate bench to spark the 17-2 run. Ruchert scored four and handed out an assist on a Bott trey. LaMunyan added four more, and Bott, Cole Mayfield, and Bryan McGreevy each drained a 3-ball.

“They didn’t hit some shots and we boarded well,” Koller added. “Everybody kind of contributed. Max (Ruchert) gave us a big boost off the bench, rebounding and point-wise.”

McGreevy opened the second half with a trey, Kade Snyder went coast-to-coast with a steal, Bott nailed a 3 off a McGreevy feed, and LaMunyan converted a feed from Snyder and the Pirate lead jumped to 43-21 with 5:05 left in the third.

Wellpinit got within 48-33 following a Cedric Brown triple with seven minutes left, but the Redskins got no closer as the Pirates finished off their 62-38 win.

LaMunyan led the way with 16 Pomeroy points. Bott hit 5-of-9 from behind the arc and finished with 15. Ruchert added eight as the Pirates, for the second consecutive year, march into today’s semifinal.

“We feel really awesome because we are going to take hardware home again,” LaMunyan said. “Hopefully, we will get better than fifth place.”

“Tomorrow (Friday) is going to be tough,” Koller added. “We’ll watch them and scout them and see what we can do.”
