SPOKANE — A four-minute stretch to open the second half sealed DeSales’ fate here Thursday in state Class 2B girls’ basketball quarterfinal action.
The Irish trailed 22-19 at intermission, but Toutle Lake went on an 8-1 run to expand the lead to 30-20 following two Marissa Gardner free throws with 3:58 left in the third.
The Ducks went on to post a 44-33 win.
The loss dropped DeSales into a loser-out battle this morning against Bear Creek, a 52-14 loser to Northwest Christian.
Toutle Lake takes its 24-0 record against Northwest Christian this afternoon.
“They came out of the gate in the third quarter and we tried to do a couple of things a little differently, and it backfired on us,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said. “We were stuck on 20 for a long time. The game was won in the first four minutes of the third quarter.”
Neither team could get the lid off the bucket to start this one.
The Ducks hit two of their first nine shots, a trey from Bailey Hockett and a deuce from Marissa Gardner.
The Irish missed their first five shots and turned the ball over twice before Ashlyn Lyons hit a trey with 4:09 left in the first.
Following another Irish turnover, Lyons buried another trey and DeSales grabbed a 6-5 lead with 3:11 left in the first.
The Ducks closed the quarter on a mini 6-3 run and led 11-9 after one quarter.
Emily Baumgart drained a 3 to open the second and produce a 12-11 Irish lead, but Bailey Hockett answered with a Duck 3 and Toutle Lake was off on an 11-4 run to grab a 22-16 lead following Makala Gardner’s three-point play with 3:22 left in the half.
Teresa Acock closed the gap at the half with a triple as DeSales closed to within 22-19 at intermission.
“We didn’t play fantastic in the first half,” Duncan said. “(But) we were right there.”
Britzy Hockett made a steal and drove for a bucket to get the Ducks started 15 seconds into the second half.
Allison Wujek converted an Irish free throw to get DeSales to 20, but the Ducks kept coming. Britzy Hockett finished what she started with a fastbreak lay in and a 34-20 Toutle Lake lead with 2:10 left in the third.
Acock hit a trey, but Kelsey Wason closed the quarter for the Ducks with a bucket and the Ducks went to the fourth up 36-23.
Lyons drove the length of the floor to culminate an Irish 5-0 run to open the fourth and cut the lead to 36-27 with 6:37 left. Bailey Hockett hit a bucket to pace a 5-0 Duck run and expand the lead back to 41-27 with 4:55 left.
The Irish got a pair of free throws from Baumgart, a bucket from Acock, and two free throws from Hannah Leahy to get back in it at 41-33 with 2:14 to play.
Samantha Woodley hit a shot-clock desperation heave as she was falling, and the Ducks had this one at 43-33 with 70 seconds left.
“To our kids’ credit, we came back,” Duncan said. “They didn’t give up and we had some chances to cut it to six. I’m pleased with our effort. We lost our legs a little in the third and didn’t shoot particularly well in the third. We weren’t reading their defense very well. We let them dictate what we were doing. They are absolutely a good club.”
Acock finished with 10 points, and Lyons had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, to lead the Irish.
