PORTLAND — Walla Walla High School grad and Portland State guard Gary Winston has been named second-team All-Big Sky Conference player.
Winston, a 6-foot junior out of Wa-Hi, earned second-team honors while averaging 11.5 points, 2.8 assists and shooting .443 from 3-point range.
Winston also proved to be a clutch performer, twice hitting 3-pointers that helped decide games.
He made the game-winner with 2.6 seconds remaining in the third overtime of an 81-78 win against Montana on Jan. 11.
Then, with the Vikings clinging to a 61-58 lead at Sacramento State on Jan. 16 in overtime, Winston buried a trey to make it 64-58 with 42 seconds to go, to essentially seal the win.
Over the last 17 games, Winston has averaged 14.8 points, scoring in double figures 16 times. He ranks third in the Big Sky Conference in 3-point percentage (43-97, .443), and has led the team in scoring seven times and assists 11 times this season. He has posted career-highs of 26 points and seven assists (twice).
Winston and Portland State (16-13, 11-9 in Big Sky play) squares off against Montana (17-12, 12-8) and fellow Wa-Hi grad Michael Weisner, a redshirt junior forward for the Grizzlies, in the first round of the Big Sky Conference tournament at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Ogden, Utah.
