ATHENA — A head-on crash Thursday afternoon on Highway 11 near Athena injured four people, two of whom were taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
According to Oregon State Police Lt. Mike Turner, a 1996 Honda Civic driven by Gregory Murray, 44, of Milton-Freewater, was southbound on Highway 11 near milepost 15 about 12:53 p.m. It was passing several vehicles when it encountered a northbound 1996 Toyota Camry driven by Jim Rasmussen, 77, of Pendleton.
Both drivers took evasive action but collided nearly head-on in the vicinity of the northbound lanes and shoulder, according to Turner.
Murray and an adult female passenger received minor injuries not requiring hospital transport, police said.
Rasmussen and passenger Donna Rasmussen, 74, received serious but non-life threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to St. Anthony Hospital, police said.
An investigation was continuing today.
