Whitman men' tennis team storms Tacoma

TACOMA — The No. 12 nationally-ranked Whitman men’s tennis team ran the program’s Northwest Conference winning streak to 109 matches with a weekend sweep of Tacoma. Friday afternoon the Missionaries defeated Pacific Lutheran, 8-1, and Whitman completed the sweep with a 9-0 win over Puget Sound on Saturday.

In singles action, the Missionaries did not lose a single set to the Loggers as all six Missionaries won in straight sets.

Andy Riggs got it started at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-3 win over the Loggers’ Daniel Duel. Whitman’s Jacob Christensen completed the singles’ sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Severt.

In doubles play, the Missionaries only lost five games while taking all three doubles matches.

The Missionaries downed Pacific Lutheran, 8-1, to start the two-day NWC conference Tacoma swing on Friday.

“We played without four or five of our regular starters,” Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. “It was quite gratifying to get different guys in the lineup. The guys did really well. It was a good performance.”

James Rivers and Steven Roston claimed an 8-3 victory for Whitman at No. 1 doubles, Andrew La Cava and Parker Silverman earned an 8-2 triumph in the No. 2 spot and Jake Hoeger and Jacob Christensen won at No. 3 by an 8-5 tally.

“It’s always fun for guys to play with different guys on the team,” Northam said. “They seized that opportunity.”

Whitman also seized five of six singles opportunities for conquest — all in straight sets. Andy Riggs took No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Hoeger moved up to the No. 2 slot and won 6-2, 6-1.

Will Huskey, at No. 3, and Alex Noyes, in the No. 4 position, duplicated Riggs’ showing with 6-1, 6-0 wins, respectively, while Silverman recorded a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5.

“It was a pretty dominating singles performance from the guys,” Northam said.

Whitman begins a spring break tour with a trip to Claremeont, Calif. Monday for a non-conference match with Pomona.
