VANCOUVER, Wash. — Ten-year-old Walla Walla gymnast Jack Wanichek qualified for the Men’s Regional Gymnastics Championship over the weekend with a score of 53 during the state championship meet here.
Wanichek scored a 9.5 on the parallel bars to secure his place at the upcoming meet.
Wanichek has been part of the Mid-Columbia Gymnastics team out of Richland for the past two years. He travels three times a week to the Tri-Cities for the three-hour practices. He competes in all six events (pommel horse, still rings, floor exercise, high bar, vault, and parallel bars).
“This is something I’ve worked for all year and I’m so excited to go,” Wanichek said.
More than 250 male gymnasts competed at the state championships. The regional championships are April 12 in Portland.
Wanichek is a third grader at Prospect Point Elementary, part of the AcroKnights team at Walla Walla Valley Academy, basketball, golf, football and will compete in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games this summer.
