Warriors split with Everett

WALLA WALLA — Jamie Moe pitched a five-inning complete game as Walla Walla defeated Everett 11-3 in the first game of an NWAACC softball doubleheader Sunday at Warriors Field.

The Warriors backed Moe with a 12-hit offensive assault that included three singles by sophomore shortstop Paige Pontarolo, who drove in one run and scored twice. Brook Simpson had two hits, including her first home run of the season, and drove in two runs, and Sam Robillard had a pair of singles and scored three times.

Moe allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six and walking a pair. Kayla Brissey hit her second homer of the season for Everett, which was a sign of things to come in the second game.

Brissey homered again in the nightcap, drove in four runs and scored three times as Everett rallied from a 12-6 deficit after three innings to defeat the Warriors 14-13.

Shelby Merk had four hits, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Trojans, Minna Ward had three hits and two runs driven home, and Demaree Trull had a pair of hits, including a homer, two RBIs and five runs scored.

Simpson homered again in the nightcap for Walla Walla. She also tripled, drove home two runs and scored twice.

Marisa Gonzalaz had three of WWCC’s 14 hits, including a home run, drove home two and scored a pair. And Hanna DeBaugh singled twice, scored once and picked up one RBI.

“Our offense really came alive in game one and we had very good pitching and defense,” first-year WWCC coach Mark Michaud said. “We continued to do the job offensively in game two, but Everett showed their toughness and was able to outlast us in a slugfest.

“We did a lot of positive things that we will build off of this week in practice.”

The Warriors, who split a doubleheader with Southwest Oregon on Saturday, take a 2-5 overall record into their Eastern Region opener Friday at Treasure Valley.
