No rust for Irish in win over Indians

TOUCHET — DeSales didn’t show any signs of rust due to the Irish’s extended basketball season here Tuesday afternoon in a season-opening softball game.

The Irish unleased a 12-hit attack and buried Touchet 12-1 in the nonleague affair.

“They looked like they must have been taking batting practice after basketball practice,” Touchet coach Gary Dorman said, referring to DeSales’ fourth-place finish at the Washington Class 2B state basketball tournament that finished up March 8 in Spokane.

“It was just single after single after single,” Dorman added. “They had just three extra base hits, all of them doubles.”

One of them was Ashlyn Lyons’ two-run double that highlighted an eight-run second inning outburst and pushed DeSales’ lead to 11-1. The Irish bunched six of their 12 hits in the frame and took advantage of three Touchet errors.

Lyons, Maddy Thomas, Kaylee Brown, Claire Conley and Cara Hall each picked up two hits for DeSales.

Touchet managed four hits in the game against Irish pitchers Lyons and Brown, who split those duties.

Cierra Jo McKeown singled to open the bottom of the first inning, stole second base, took third on a passed ball and scored the Indians’ lone run on Melissa Creek’s infield out. The Indians never threatened after that, Dorman said, as Lyons and Brown combined for six strikeouts and one walk.

Touchet is coming off a 2013 season in which the Indians won the Southeast 1B District title and placed third at the Class 1B state tournament in Yakima. Dorman lost two players to graduation and two others who moved.

“We’re learning a lot of new positions,” Dorman said. “We have a lot of untested players, but we are going to get better as the year goes by — hopefully.”

Touchet travels to Dayton Thursday for another nonleague game. DeSales doesn’t return to action until Tuesday when the Irish visit Columbia-Burbank.
