PRESCOTT — The Waitsburg-Prescott baseball team was held scoreless during the first five innings against McLoughlin High School here Tuesday, but erupted for five runs in the sixth to win, 5-1, on Tuesday.
W-P’s Talen Larsen and Jacob Dunn both connected on two-run doubles in the sixth, and a Nick Pearson single scored Sergio Gonzalez.
Mac-Hi could only muster four hits in the game and was held scoreless by W-P’s starting pitcher, Larsen, who went five innings and gave up three hits.
Kyle Gradwohl pitched to the final three Mac-Hi hitters in the seventh inning to get the win.
“We need to do a better job of executing when base runners are on,” Pioneer coach Michael Garcia said. “We need to have a much better plate approach, stepping into the box with confidence, knowing which pitch to drive and laying off the pitch that will send a weak grounder to the opposing team for an easy out.”
The Pioneers plated a run with two outs in the sixth inning to break the scoreless tie, before W-P’s bats erupted for their runs.
Mac-Hi starter Hunter Yensen went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs. Jacob Chaney relieved Yensen and allowed three runs over the remainder of the game.
The duo combined to walk seven batters, which Garcia said was too many.
“Hunter took a couple of innings to get his pitch zone established, (but) overall he did a good job,” Garcia said. “I was impressed with his way of being able to battle back and that says a lot about his character.”
Waitsburg-Prescott heads to the Rocket Robin Tournament in Pilot, Rock, Ore., on Friday and Saturday.
Mac-Hi squares off with Weston-McEwen on Thursday.
