POMEROY — After opening its season with a tie against Garfield-Palouse/Tekoa-Oakesdale Wednesday, Pomeroy got its first wins of the season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Class 2B combine St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus, 7-4 in game one and 14-7 in game two.
“It wasn’t like St. John really played bad, we just were more efficient in scoring runs,” Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said. “In that first game they actually outhit us, we were just a little bit more efficient. Timely hits are everything, and they just didn’t seem like they had that.”
A quartet of Pirates provided most of Pomeroy’s offense, as Taylor Lewis, Cade Gingrich, Havin Heytvelt and Cody LaMunyan each had four hits for the day.
“Those guys were the ones that really kind of produced for us and got on base,” Boyer said.
Pomeroy’s season opener against G-P/T-O on Wednesday was called for darkness with the game tied at four after eight innings. The game was originally set to be finished at a later date, but later called a tie after the schools discovered they would be charged for a full game by the umpires’ association to finish the game.
The Pirates (2-0-1) next host Asotin’s junior varsity squad for a single game on Wednesday.
