TigerScot softball wins two at tournament

RIVERSIDE — The Weston-McEwen softball team scored a combined 58 runs in the two-day Riverside tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Unsurprisingly, the TigerScots parlayed that offensive explosion into a 4-0 record, including back-to-back wins against Echo-Stanfield and tourney host Riverside on Tuesday.

Against Echo-Stanfield, Weston-McEwen’s offense and pitching guided the TigerScots to a 15-1 win. Starter Jessica Lambert tossed a complete game two-hitter and struck out 10.

The offense, led by Keegan Shepard, posted 15 runs on 13 hits. Shepard blasted four hits, including a home run, Natalie Arnold added three and Lambert came up with two hits.

“We had just a wide variety of pitching from pretty slow to fast and the girls seemed to make adjustments,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “A lot of times, the first and second innings we weren’t that explosive, but the second time through they made adjustments.”

The nightcap against Riverside saw the TigerScots power past Riverside, 12-5. The Pirates grabbed a 5-2 lead after the third inning, but Weston-McEwen responded with six in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.

“We brought the bats and that was one of big goals in this tournament,” Griggs said. “I think they made some strides that way.”

Taryn Coffman came up with five hits and Molly von Borstel added three in the win.

The TigerScots also picked up a pair of wins on Monday against Nyssa and Knappa. Weston-McEwen downed Nyssa 20-0 and blasted the Loggers 11-2, as von Borstel tossed a one-hitter against Knappa.

“We’re really happy,” Griggs said. “We’ve been talking to the kids about potential and the fact that they’re making good strides. We want to continue to get better because every one of these girls has potential. We’re going to keep striving for excellence and see if we can get better.”

The TigerScots host Echo-Stanfield next Tuesday.
