POMEROY — The Pomeroy High School baseball team fell to the Asotin junior varsity team, 16-13, on Wednesday.
Asotin jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the second inning, but the Pirates slowly chipped away at Panther lead over the next three innings. Pomeroy grabbed the lead, 12-11, after the fifth, but Asotin responded with five runs in the top of six to put the game out of reach.
“Every game almost seems like we hand over the lead to them in the early innings and then shut them down,” Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said. “We fight back and take the lead. The attitude is really good. We just don’t give up. I’m really proud of them for that.”
The Pirates notched 13 runs on only five hits, as Asotin issued 16 walks. Unfortunately, Pomeroy’s defense finished with six errors, which cost them a number of runs, Boyer said.
“In the games we’ve played so far this season, we’ve only had a couple of errors,” he said. “They were pretty critical errors when they happened. The errors are what hurt us and let them have some extra runs. There’s probably the difference right there.”
The Pirates travel to face Dayton on Tuesday.
